Introduction to Aviation

Level: Basic

Language Objectives:

This course is designed for anyone with an interest in aviation - those in aviation careers and those who are fascinated by the idea of flight. After completing this course, learners should have increased their technical and general vocabulary. They should be better readers and more efficient listeners. At the Basic, Beginning, and High Beginning levels, grammar activities help the learners to speak and write correctly. As a special part of all Aviation lessons, Air Traffic Control (ATC) language is introduced. At the Basic and Beginning levels, activities prepare the learner with the fundamentals of ATC communication. At High Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced levels, actual recorded pilot-ATC communication is used for the activities. Therefore, the student can learn correct pilot-ATC communication in this very safe environment.

Course Lessons:

1. Major Parts of an Air Plane
All people who work in aviation need to know the major parts of an airplane. In this lesson, learn the main parts and find out what each part does.

2. Accident Avoidance
The way a pilot and crew communicate can cause accidents or help avoid accidents. Find out why people from different cultures may communicate differently in the cockpit. See how this difference in communication can be dangerous.

3. Introduction to the Helicopter
Learn about the remarkable things a helicopter can do. Find out who first described a helicopter in the 15th Century. Discover the amazing characteristics and jobs of modern helicopters.

What do you know about flying boats? Do you know when they were first used? Do you know where flying boats were commonly used to transport passengers? What was so special about the flying boat called the China Clipper? Learn the answers to these questions and more in this lesson.
